R&H Suburb Profile FANNIE BAY

Fannie Bay is a middle/inner suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory, with a population of about 2700 (2006 census). The suburb is known for its quality real estate. It has a tropical climate, with wet and dry seasons, receiving heavy rainfall during the wet season, and is well-known for its spectacular lightning.

The suburb is home to the Fannie Bay Race Track, where the Darwin Turf Club holds the annual Darwin Cup, a feature of the Northern Territory racing carnival. Other attractions include the East Point Reserve, a recreational area with extensive walking and cycling paths, and picnic areas with free barbecue facilities and playgrounds. Lake Alexander offers safe, year-round swimming. The Darwin Sailing Club is located harbour-side on tranquil Vestey's Beach overlooking Fannie Bay, a popular place to watch Darwin's famous sunsets.

Royal Darwin Hospitals is nearby, as well as several schools. There are many dining options in and around Fannie Bay, as well as shopping centres in Darwin’s CBD.

Darwin has a population of more than 120,600, making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated NT, but the least populous of all Australia's capital cities. It is the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the ‘Top End's’ regional centre.

Over time Darwin has grown from a pioneer outpost and small port into one of Australia's most modern and multicultural cities. Its proximity to Asia makes it an important Australian gateway to countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin, ending at Port Augusta in South Australia.
